CurlSpotting: Kelis

CurlSpotting: Kelis

We all know that her milkshake brings all the boys to the yard, but what’s the secret to singer Kelis’ curls?

Her luscious, thick curly mane is as easily identifiable as her vocal sounds. From the bold, “look at me” colors to the fluffy coils, Kelis may be in Hair Hall of Fame territory.

I spotted Kelis’ curls … or better yet, her fluffy waves during the July 13th episode of Fashion Police (video below). While I miss her textured, curly strands, I was digging her new ‘do. It appeared to be the result of a rollerset, flipped out and curled ala Judy Jetson. There may also be some “magic hair” involved. An apparent lover of colors, Kelis stylized the look with violet highlights.

I personally like the look but believe that her natural curls are more flattering. It’s her signature. A little over a decade ago, when I was hooked on hair color (the brighter the better), I can’t tell you what I would have done for the blond and pink colored curls she once sported.

On a side note, I have always loved Kelis’ eccentric music and eclectic style. When she first arrived on the scene, it was deemed too far out for some, but little did we know that Kelis was just ahead of her time–pre-Gaga, Nicki, and Katie (I knew it!). I am still a fan of her video for “Caught Out There.” She may have been screaming “I hate you so much right now,” but I was thinking “I love your curly mane!”

You may also remember her uber long, straightened (and perhaps also magically enhanced) hair in “Get Along With You.” That video is reminiscent of  Madonna’s “Bedtime Stories” with a Tim Burton flare. It ventures into Tool (remember that band?) territory and always reminds me of my absolute favorite artist and the director of the soundtrack of my life, Bjork. So it was no surprise to find Kelis sharing pictures of her hanging out with Bjork during her interview with Fashion Police’s Joan Rivers.

Check out the video below and let me know your thoughts on Kelis’ new look.

Thandie Newton Goes Natural

You may have seen her in Mission Impossible 2, Crash, or For Colored Girls, among an impressive list of other films. However, Thandie Newton first made an impression on me in the 1991 film, Flirting. She and Nicole Kidman, who sported her beautiful red hair  (oh, I wish she could reclaim her curly mane), were just budding actresses at the time. Thandie’s career, like Nicole’s, took off. She’s since been herald for her talents as a Bafta award-winning actress as well as for her beauty. Little did we know that throughout it all, Thandie was also struggling with her naturally curly hair.

In an interview with make-up artist Kay Montano of Kaymontano.com, Thandie opens up about her childhood experiences and spending two years growing out her relaxer.

“To be honest I do struggle with hairdressers, even now. The main problem is that hairdressers (and some at the top of their game) don’t understand how my type of hair changes dramatically depending on what climate, substance, effects it. Water in any form is like a cheeky magic wand – even mist! But with the correct tools, my kind of hair can do ANYTHING, which is brilliant!”

Nicole Richie’s Curly Mane

I haven’t had much time to indulge in my deep love of fashion, but this month’s Glamour magazine caught my attention, “manely” (yes I went there) because it features Nicole Richie. In an interview with the fashion trendsetter, Glamour shares 5 Fab Beauty Ideas To Steal From Nicole Richie, including details of her curly mane.

“I have naturally curly hair, so ‘natural’ beach waves are not so natural for me. I like to braid my hair at night and then let it out the next day. And I also curl my hair with a flat iron,” says Richie.

While Richie’s hair is clearly stylized for the above photo, the self-proclaimed hair pro has naturally curly hair. Although she often rocks a mean blow out, I would like to see Richie’s natural texture. Fat curls or skinny ramen noodles?

What are your thoughts on Nicole Richie’s curly (or straight) mane?

Kudos to the photographer for the beautiful spread!
