CurlSpotting: Kelis

We all know that her milkshake brings all the boys to the yard, but what’s the secret to singer Kelis’ curls?

Her luscious, thick curly mane is as easily identifiable as her vocal sounds. From the bold, “look at me” colors to the fluffy coils, Kelis may be in Hair Hall of Fame territory.

I spotted Kelis’ curls … or better yet, her fluffy waves during the July 13th episode of Fashion Police (video below). While I miss her textured, curly strands, I was digging her new ‘do. It appeared to be the result of a rollerset, flipped out and curled ala Judy Jetson. There may also be some “magic hair” involved. An apparent lover of colors, Kelis stylized the look with violet highlights.

I personally like the look but believe that her natural curls are more flattering. It’s her signature. A little over a decade ago, when I was hooked on hair color (the brighter the better), I can’t tell you what I would have done for the blond and pink colored curls she once sported.

On a side note, I have always loved Kelis’ eccentric music and eclectic style. When she first arrived on the scene, it was deemed too far out for some, but little did we know that Kelis was just ahead of her time–pre-Gaga, Nicki, and Katie (I knew it!). I am still a fan of her video for “Caught Out There.” She may have been screaming “I hate you so much right now,” but I was thinking “I love your curly mane!”

You may also remember her uber long, straightened (and perhaps also magically enhanced) hair in “Get Along With You.” That video is reminiscent of  Madonna’s “Bedtime Stories” with a Tim Burton flare. It ventures into Tool (remember that band?) territory and always reminds me of my absolute favorite artist and the director of the soundtrack of my life, Bjork. So it was no surprise to find Kelis sharing pictures of her hanging out with Bjork during her interview with Fashion Police’s Joan Rivers.

Check out the video below and let me know your thoughts on Kelis’ new look.

Curlspotting Millie

I spotted this amazing mane from a distance.

It was just another Saturday dedicate to errand running with my significant other (SO), until … we turned a corner while driving in the car, and my eyes caught a bouncing mane. It was spectacular—a pillar of curls proudly resting upon the head of a young woman in a flowy yellow dress. Spotted!

I begged my SO to turn the car around. After a few of his rejections and pleas for me to reflect on my curl addiction, we whipped the car around to track down that curly mane. Was it crazy? Yeah, maybe a little, but I had to find out more about this girl’s hair. I figured I’d ask her, accept her “are you crazy” stares, and keep it moving Susan. The worst she could say was no.

We pulled over. I got out the car and walked over to her, anticipating her side eye. Instead, she turned in my direction and stared at my hair! We smiled at each other, and I went in for the kill.

“Hi, my name is Nay, and I love your curly mane,” I said, making it clear that I was not a psycho stalker.

She introduced herself as Millie, and after complementing each other’s hair, she agreed to share with us her hair story. Our interview went as follows:

Nay: Your hair is very pretty. Have you always been al naturale?

Millie: Thank you! No, I permed my hair from when I was 10 up until I was 20 years old.

Nay: Why did you decide to go natural?

Millie: A girlfriend decided to do it, so I decided to try it as well. That was in 2010. I realize now that I actually like my curls. Plus, my hair is the longest it’s ever been.

Nay: When you decided to go natural, did you immediately chop it all off, or did you grow out your perm?

Millie: I slowly transitioned for 1 ½ years.

Nay: How was that like?

Millie: The in between phase was tough, especially when I had two textures—curly and straight ends—but I wouldn’t relax again. I’ve been fully natural for 3 months now, with no straight ends.

Nay (applauding Millie): Do you straighten your hair, or are you a full-on naturalista?

Millie: In the beginning I did straighten my hair, but I rarely do it now.

Nay: So aside from genetics, how are you maintaining your mane?

Millie (smiles because I’m probably confirming my madness): I wash my hair every 2-3 days. I shampoo with VO5 and condition with Milk & Silk (never heard of it, but she says she gets it at Sally’s Beauty Supply – Shop SallyBeauty.com for Salon Products). I sometimes leave the conditioner in my hair. I also use Olive oil [the product].

Nay: That’s it??

Millie: Yes, and I towel dry. I occasionally diffuse it.

Nay (baffled at the simplicity of her routine): Do you have any tips for girls who are newly natural and just learning about their curly manes?

Millie: They should know that it’s [transitioning] a process, and you have to commit to it. Once you’re all natural, just let your hair do its own thing. Also, if you use lot of conditioner in the shower while combing, it’ll help to detangle your hair.

Sometimes less is actually more.

CurlSpotting: Wendy Williams’ Curly Audience Member

“What could possibly be wrong? I mean really, you’re cute!” Wendy Williams complements a curly audience member … and her mane. You know she was checking out the mane!

I see you curlie! Shaking that mane. Shaking that mane.

It happened to me once before when watching Bethenny Frankel’s talk show, and now again at Wendy Williams’ June 27th episode. Another great curly mane is spotted! That’s twice in one week that a naturally curly haired audience member stole the show.

This curly girl, Sasha, stood up to ask Wendy a question. Her picked out fro was in full display. Wendy proceeded to say, “What could possibly be wrong? I mean really, you’re cute!”

I, like Wendy, proceeded to stare at Sasha’s hair (see photo). Her style appears to be a picked out afro. I just hope her dilemma (can’t remember what it was, blind sighted by her mane) was finally solved.

Did you see her curly mane?

CurlSpotting: Bethenny’s Talk Show Gets Captivated By Curls – Part II

In part one of this installment, I literally drooled over an audience member’s mane at Bethenny Frankel’s talk show. In a desperate attempt to share this amazing head of hair with you, I took a photo of my TV. Thanks to Bethenny’s show, we now have liftoff video! Our curly girl makes her entrance at approximately 5:00. All together now: Aaaa-maaazing! Oh, and Bethenny’s food tips are fab too.  🙂

Blake Sunshine's curly hair on Bethenny talk show

“Look at that sexy hair!” exclaims Bethenny Frankel during her talk show. Blake Sunshine, a studio audience member, steals the show with her captivating curls. Please excuse this pic’s quality, but you get the gist—A-maaazing!

You may have heard that the June 25th episode of Bethenny Frankel’s talk show featured Kris Jenner of the infamous K-clan (fun interview), but if you’re a curlie like me, you caught the real star of the show–curls!

A random studio audience member named Blake Sunshine (she clearly and maybe purposely stated her name) asked Bethenny some question I can’t even recall. All I can remember seeing was a glow, literally a sun-shining halo of amazing, blond curls.

Miss Sunshine was working it and rightfully so. Bethenny even took notice, saying, “Look at that sexy hair!” Miss Sunshine was later invited to join the show’s cooking segment. Perhaps this isn’t the last time we’ll see those curls again!
